Robert Jacob Adler was born on October 17, 1942, to Verna and Howard Adler. One of six children, Bob grew up on South Adelaide Avenue in Highland Park.
An adventurer and outdoorsman, Bob spent many years living in Colorado, where he attended both college and law school, and joined the ski patrol in Steamboat Springs. Bob worked as a defense attorney who championed the rights of the poor. He loved to share courtroom stories about protecting his clients from injustice.
On February 28, 1981, Bob celebrated the birth of his daughter, Rebecca. Four years later, in 1985, when Bob’s father died, he returned to New Jersey. There, Bob reunited with a childhood friend, Toby Kleinman, who became the love of Bob’s life.
Bob and Toby got married at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in 1988, and for the next 36 years, they were inseparable. Bob co-parented Toby’s three children, and adopted Toby’s daughter Rachel in 2017. Together, Bob and Toby formed a law practice as child advocates. They loved taking long road trips and sharing morning coffee. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. After Bob’s leg was amputated in December 2014, he proudly returned to one of his favorite destinations: The Grand Canyon.
Bob died on March 1, 2024, at the age of 81, while traveling with Toby, Rebecca and their three dogs. He spent the last months of his life basking in the Florida sunshine, and enjoying time with his family. In addition to Toby, Bob is survived by his: sons, Daniel and Robert; daughters, Rachel and Rebecca; daughter-in-law, Annie; three grandchildren, Jesse, Solly and Maya; siblings, Judy Moore, Gary Adler, Ken Adler and Bruce Adler; nephews, Brian Adler, Erik Adler, Garrett Adler and Joseph Moore He was predeceased by his beloved brother Leo and nephew, Howie Adler. Bob was an animal lover known for his humor, optimism and steadfast commitment to helping others.
