Pongrác “Jimmy” Gruber, a long time resident of Somerset, NJ, passed away at home surrounded by family, on January 6, 2023.
Born on January 1,1937 in Csót, Hungary, he was one of 3 children born to Hérics, Elvira and Pongrác Gruber Sr. Pongrác, known as Jimmy by friends and family, immigrated to the United States during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and became a citizen on August 26,1966. He lived in New Brunswick before coming to Somerset in the late 1970’s. He was a livery driver in New Brunswick, NJ for many years throughout the 1980’s. Later on, Jimmy provided private transportation services while also delivering for a medical/pharmaceutical company until he retired.
He was a communicant of St. Ladislaus R.C. Church in New Brunswick and was an active member of the Hungarian American Athletic Club in New Brunswick. Throughout his life, Jimmy enjoyed hobbies such as hunting, making wine, and spending time with his friends at the HAAC. He also loved to travel with his beloved partner Eta Juhász, not just to faraway places but also to local historical sites in the tri-state area. Jimmy was known by his family to be able to fix anything, be it plumbing, electrical and mechanical and was always ready to help.
Jimmy is survived by his nephew Mark Gruber, his niece Kamilla D’Alterio, her husband David D’Alterio, his great nephews Valentino and Nico D’Alterio.
Funeral services will be 2PM, Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Gowen Funeral Home, 239 Livingston Ave, New Brunswick, NJ where friends may view from 10AM to 2PM. Interment to follow in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick, NJ.
