Pedro Mercado-Rodriguez, 83, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020 at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick after having a massive stroke. He was born and raised in Lares, Puerto Rico and would travel back and forth to New Brunswick, New Jersey, until after the Hurricane Maria.
He was a graduate of West Puerto Rico University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He taught English and Spanish in many elementary schools in Puerto Rico. Pedro became a visiting nurse for several years before becoming a Security Guard for Rutgers University, New Brunswick until retiring in 2002.
Pedro loved gardening, played guitar and enjoyed listening to music. He enjoyed carpentry and was an all round handyman. Family Reunions were a great love for him.
Predeceased by his parents Juan and Clotilde and five of his siblings, Pedro will sadly missed by his loving daughters Norma Acevedo, Zulma Mercado, Luz Ines Mercado and Betzaida (Betsy) Mercado, his step-daughters Maribel Soto, Olga I. Soto, and Gricel Santiago-Tavares, his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren, his dear sister Ana and husband Angel Gonzalez, with whom he lived and his four other siblings in Puerto Rico.
Funeral services for the family only will take place on April 4, 2020 with cremation at the Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick, NJ.
