Nikolaus Gergen passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Veterans Memorial Home in Edison, NJ at the age of 89. He was born in Becicherecul-Mic (Klein-Betschkerek), Romania, and at the age of 9, moved to Graz, Austria, where he went to school and trained to be a machinist. He immigrated to the United States with his mother in 1950 and settled in New Brunswick, NJ.
Nikolaus was a Korean War veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1951 - 1955. After being honorably discharged, he raised his family in North Brunswick and worked as a machinist at Johnson and Johnson until retiring in 1992.
He was an active member of the German American Club in New Brunswick, was an avid bowler, fisherman, and gardener, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Nikolaus is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna Sendelbach Gergen, his children Ann Marie Waidelich and Joseph Gergen, his grandchildren Joseph and his wife Jenn, Thomas and his wife Alexandra, and Katherine, and his great-grandchildren, Jacob and Mason. He is predeceased by his parents, Katharina Dewald and Josef Gergen.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019, 10:30 am, at Saint Mary of Mount Virgin Church, 190 Sandford Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
