Lilas Y. Saltiel, 91 formerly of Highland Park, NJ died Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Davis Nursing Home, Wilmington, North Carolina.
Born in New Brunswick, NJ to Irving and Jenny Youngman, the second of two daughters, she was a lifelong Highland Park resident before moving to Wilmington, NC in 2013. She was married to the love of her life, Sam J. Saltiel for nearly 50 years when he died in 2003. She was predeceased by her sister, Rita Sambiante, and daughter, Delecia Saltiel.
Mrs. Saltiel was also a lifelong member of Congregation Etz Ahaim in Highland Park, NJ. Lilas loved living in Highland Park. Along with her husband Sam J. Saltiel, she raised five daughters and then worked as a bookkeeper for Menlo Engineering. She was dedicated to community service and was always ready and willing to help a friend in need, even if it was just to listen with a compassionate ear. She volunteered with the Highland Park public library, the local food bank, and the Sisterhood of Congregation of Etz Ahaim. Lilas enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and visiting the beach.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Alberta and James Shellem of Leland, NC, Drs. Iris Saltiel and Philip Kaplan of Chapel Hill, NC, Marta and Luke Hess of Franklin Park, and Paula and Steven Wieczerzak of Sewaren; eight grandchildren, Ryan and Jessica Stephens, Megan Merson and David Shellem, Samantha and Benjamin Kaplan, and, Samuel and Joshua Wieczerzak, and, four great grandchildren, Lilian Merson, Caroline and Tucker Shellem, and, Dalia Glenn.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM at Congregation Etz Ahaim, 230 Denison St., Highland Park. Burial will follow at Polie Zedek Cemetery, New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Etz Ahaim or to a local food bank. Arrangements are by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.
