Julius E. Papp

September 16, 1947 — April 10, 2024

New Brunswick, NJ

Julius E. Papp, a lifelong resident of New Brunswick, NJ passed away peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson/ Barnabas Medical Center on April 10, 2024. He was the eldest son of the late Julius and Vilma Csengery Papp, past owners of The Friendly Tavern at 299 Nielsen Street, now the site of Johnson & Johnson Corporate Headquarters. He attended St. Ladislaus Elementary School, St. Peter’s High School and Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey).

Julius worked in the hospitality industry and was the front desk manager at Ramada Inn, Edison, NJ (1977-1985) before moving on and up to be an instructor at the New York Food and Hotel Management School (1986-1994) and an adjunct at New York University (1989-1994). He became an administrator at N.Y.U. for the School of Professional Studies in the hospitality, real estate and business programs until his retirement in 2010.

Having been raised in New Brunswick’s once vibrant Hungarian community, Julius loved all things Hungarian; food, music, dance, literature and visited the land of his heritage several times. He enjoyed classical music, opera and especially the waltzes of Johann Strauss. An annual highlight for him and his family were the New Year’s Eve Concerts broadcasted from his favorite city, Vienna. Besides Hungary and Austria, Julius was well traveled internationally, having visited and especially enjoyed Turkey, Italy and Greece (Crete). Closer to home he loved New York City and his favorite bohemia, Provincetown at the very end of Cape Cod. Being an avid photographer, it is where he did his best work.

Julius was witty, intelligent, creative, loyal and a man of great generosity and kindness, and he leaves behind many funny and warm memories for his family, friends, former colleagues and students. He was also a man of great faith. His devotion to his church and especially to Our Lady of Guadalupe comforted and fortified him through the medical difficulties of these last few years. He passed firmly believing that there wouldn’t be just a period at the end of his years, but rather a comma.

Julius was predeceased by his parents and his brother Walter (2008), and leaves behind to mourn him his nieces Amy Papp Malone and Holly Papp, his  grand niece Jasmin Kaufmann, sister- in –law Bonnie Walsifer Papp, all of St. Petersburg, Fl and cousins Elvira Kostick and Eleanor Newman of Coral Springs and Hollywood, Fl.  Also left to mourn and remember him are friends and former students global and local,  especially Erica Rothstein, Brooklyn, NY, Tracy Wenk of Edison and Steven L. Macy and Chris Kurszeski of New Brunswick, NJ

A graveside service at St. Peter Cemetery, New Brunswick will be held on April 30, 2024 at 10:30AM. All are welcome. The arrangements are entrusted to Gowen Funeral Home in New Brunswick, NJ
