John S. Horvath died in his home on September 27, 2022. He was 94 years old. John was born in New Brunswick NJ and was a graduate of New Brunswick High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1948-1952), rising to the rank of Staff Sargent. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War.
John and his young family moved to Somerset NJ in 1960, where he lived for 53 years. He worked as a chemical laboratory technician for Air Reduction (Airco) and then as a salesman for its chemicals and plastics division, which was acquired by Air Products in the 1970s. He retired in 1994. His charm, outgoing and friendly manner, and wit made him a great success in life as well as in his work.
John was an avid amateur mycologist and was a member of the NJ Mycological Association for many decades, serving as president 2000-2001. In later years John became an enthusiastic hiker with the University Outing Club.
John was pre-deceased by his wife of 54 years, Theresa (Gentile) Horvath and by his brother Charles. He is survived by his beloved children, Theresa Horvath (Harry Pomeranz) and Steven Horvath (Barbara Carey); two grandchildren Veronica Beers (Anthony Beers) and Claire Horvath (James Carneiro); and two great grandchildren, Liliana and Natasha Beers.
