Joan (Berman) Hammel, 86, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was born in New York and grew up in Highland Park, NJ.
She was a graduate of the Trenton State Teachers College in Ewing, NJ with a bachelors degree in education. Joan taught second grade in the Highland Park School system for five years. After her years of teaching, Joan became a stay at home mom to her children. Once her children were grown, she went to work in the family business, Berman's Hardware, with her husband, Edward.
Joan was very involved in the East Brunswick Jewish Center Sisterhood. She enjoyed playing the piano, tennis and mahjong.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Irving and Ruth (Adler) Berman and her husband of 62 years, Edward Hammel in 2013, she is survived by her loving children Susan Hunziker, Stacy and her husband Frank Chelkowski and Steven Hammel, her cherished grandchildren Jessica, Courtney, Alison, Jaime and Micalene and her great grandchildren Rhett and Elijah.
Graveside service will be held at the Beth Israel Cemetery, 1 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge, NJ on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 11:00 am.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick, NJ.
