Mrs. Gertrude (nee Zwiebel) Klaus, 89, born in New Brunswick, resided most of her life in Highland Park, NJ, entered eternal rest on Friday, August 20, 2021, at her home in East Brunswick.
At age 20, she was Valedictorian of her graduating class at New Jersey College for Women, (Douglas College) where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Gert was happily married to Irving Klaus for 64 years until his death in 2016. Mrs. Klaus was employed for a brief time at Bell Labs as a statistician. She loved her busy life as a homemaker, giving of herself to numerous volunteer activities, such as recording Books for the Blind.
Mrs. Klaus was a devout member of Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth for many years and became the Temple's first female President. She
was a role model and a leader.
She was a woman who was superbly talented. Mrs. Klaus was an accomplished pianist, seamstress, knitter, weaver, and needle crafter. She was always in the kitchen baking and cooking for her family and invited guests.
Mrs. Klaus had a special love of Gematria. A lifelong learner with immeasurable curiosity she thrived on in-depth learning and acquiring knowledge.
Mrs. Klaus loved to play cards including cribbage particularly with her husband and family. In addition to reading novels voraciously, she was an avid reader of the New York Times, mastering the Sunday crossword puzzle.
She studied for and became a Bat Mitzvah during her adult years.
Gert was predeceased by her parents Samuel and Bella (nee Schwartz) Zwiebel as well as her husband Irving Klaus, and sister, Doris Arshan. She leaves behind her loving children Teddy Klaus, Bonnie Guttenplan and Mindy Klaus Cehelyk, her cherished seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and her dear sister, Sylvia Yoskowitz.
Mrs. Klaus loved her life. She gave of herself to everyone fortunate enough to know her, and in turn, she was adored by all.
Funeral Services will take place at the Highland Park Conservative Temple-CAE, August 22, 2021, at 11 am. Interment will follow at Washington Cemetery, Deans Rhode Hall Road, South Brunswick, (Deans), NJ.
Arrangements are under the care of the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ.
