Dr. Doris Chilton Kahn Gunsher

Doris Chilton Kahn Gunsher peacefully passed away at her home on May 18, 2023. Dr. Chilton was 94 years old. Doris was the youngest child of Dr. B. Bernard and Bertha Chilton.
Born in the Bronx, Dr. Chilton lived most of her adult life with her husband Dr. Stuart Kahn and their family in Highland Park. Following Stuart’s passing Doris moved to the Clearbrook Community in Monroe Township, where she met and married Jerome Gunsher.
Dr. Chilton is a graduate of Hunter College and NYU Dental School. A true renaissance woman, Dr. Chilton was of only three females in the graduating class of 1951. Dr. Chilton was accepted into the prestigious post-doctoral Pediatric Dentistry Program at the University of Michigan, but chose to enter into practice with her husband Stuart in Highland Park before retiring from the practice of dentistry in 1986. She was very proud that she was able to balance a professional career while being a completely devoted mother to her three sons. She was profiled in a May 7, 1978 New York Times article entitled “Women Dentists – A Rarity”.
Doris served on the Board of Trustees of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple and was President of the Temple’s Sisterhood. Additionally, she was President of the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey.
Doris was predeceased by her husbands Dr. Stuart L. Kahn and Jerome Gunsher and her brother Dr. Neal W. Chilton. She will be missed by her children Richie (Toni) of Boca Raton, FL, Paul (Janet) of Philadelphia, PA and Jim (Jen) of Winchester, MA. Doris leaves behind grandchildren Barry (Natalia), Brooke, Stephanie, and Hayley Kahn and great grandchildren Maia and Mateo Kahn Mora.
She is also survived by stepchildren Meir (Cheryl), Susan, and Anna Gunsher and step grandchild Aaron (Shuli) Gunsher and ten step great grandchildren.
The funeral will take place on Monday May 22, 2023 at 10am at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple. Contributions are to be made to the Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey.
